Biomethane pipeline Leuze-en-Hainaut

Why this infrastructure?

Engie plans to build a new biomethane production site in the Leuze-en-Hainaut industrial zone. This site will be connected to Fluxys' gas transmission system in order to help green Belgium's energy mix.

To this end, Fluxys is conducting a study on the laying of a new pipeline connecting the production site, which is located at the intersection of Chemin de Beloeil and the Europe II industrial zone, with an existing Fluxys pipeline, which crosses Chaussée de Péruwelz.

The final decision on the construction of this pipeline will be taken in the coming months based on the results of this study. If approved, the pipeline is scheduled to be laid in early 2027, provided that all the necessary permits are obtained (see the schedule below).

Minimising disruption

Fluxys is committed to making every effort to minimise disruption caused by the construction of pipelines and so routes are planned mainly along existing infrastructure such as pipelines, high-voltage cables and roads. Likewise, special attention is paid to ecologically sensitive areas along the routes.

Following the ongoing preliminary study phase, we expect to make a final decision on project implementation in mid-2025.

Fluxys works with the authorities and the owners and operators of the land concerned throughout the preparation of a project (permit phase) as well as the construction of pipelines.

Some key figures

  • Transport of gaseous biomethane
  • Municipalities through which the pipeline passes: Leuze-en-Hainaut
  • Length: ± 3 km
  • Diameter: 150 mm
  • Low pressure: 15 bar

Consultation

Landowners and operators have their own point of contact at Fluxys Belgium, from the preliminary study of the project to the restoration of their land following the construction of the line. This allows them to consult with someone who is familiar with their concerns and the features of their land from the outset.

When?* Who will be involved? What will happen?
April-May 2025 Owners and operators  Identification of the relevant parties
September-October 2025 Owners and operators  Information meetings presenting the project - Relevant local residents will receive a personal invitation
As of the submission of the Declaration of Public Utility Owners             Conclusion of an agreement with the owners of the affected land
Before work in the work area starts Operators            Drafting of a site description, agreed by both sides
After excavation of the trench Operators  Description of drainage facilities (if any)
After restoration of drainage facilities  Operators  Confirmation of restoration of drainage facilities
After restoration of the land  Operators  Handover of documents for the release of the land, and assessment by both sides of damage and payment of compensation
