Fluxys Belgium: Helping to accelerate the energy transition

Fluxys Belgium is at the forefront of the energy transition, playing a pivotal role in developing infrastructure in support of a sustainable and low-carbon future. As a leading infrastructure company, Fluxys Belgium is dedicated to creating innovative solutions that facilitate the shift towards renewable energy sources. Our commitment is evident in a comprehensive approach to integrating natural gas, hydrogen, biomethane, and CO₂ into a cohesive energy system that supports a greener, flexible and affordable energy system. We roll out infrastructure in alignment with the direction the market is taking and respond agilely to evolving needs, ensuring our network remains future-proof and ready to support the transition at the pace of demand.

By gradually developing a nationwide open-access hydrogen network, Fluxys Belgium is establishing vital connections between industrial zones and neighbouring countries. This strategic initiative is laying the groundwork to transform Belgium into a central hydrogen hub for the economy in Belgium and North-West Europe.

In addition to hydrogen, Fluxys Belgium is also focusing on the development of open-access CO₂ transport networks across various regions. These networks are designed to connect industrial zones within Belgium and extend to neighbouring countries, positioning Belgium as a pivotal CO₂ hub for the economy in North-West Europe.

By establishing these essential infrastructures, Fluxys Belgium is paving the way for a more sustainable and interconnected energy future.

Infrastructure development

Fluxys Belgium is committed to developing a multi-molecule infrastructure that integrates natural gas, hydrogen, biomethane, and CO₂. Key initiatives include transitioning existing infrastructure to support renewable and low-carbon molecules, and building dedicated hydrogen and CO₂ backbones to help decarbonise the economy. Where worthwhile, we aim to optimally reuse existing infrastructure to reduce CO₂ emissions and minimise impact on communities and the environment.

Hydrogen initiatives

Fluxys Belgium is spearheading several key initiatives, through its subsidiary, Fluxys hydrogen, appointed as operator for Belgium’s hydrogen network:

  • Developing hydrogen pipelines and import terminals.
  • Collaborating with neighbouring countries for cross-border hydrogen connections.
  • Participating in the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative to develop hydrogen infrastructure in 28 European countries.
  • The Belgian hydrogen network and import terminals recognised as a Project of Common Interest by the European Commission.

CO₂ capture, re-use and storage

Fluxys Belgium is working together with stakeholders, authorities and regulators to actively develop several CO₂ capture and storage projects, including:

  • Fluxys c-grid appointed as CO₂ network operator in Wallonia.
  • CO₂ transport networks in the Flemish and Walloon regions, supported by European CEF grants.
  • CO₂ export facilities in Antwerp and Zeebrugge with multimodal capabilities.

Biomethane and Bio-LNG

Fluxys Belgium is enhancing its infrastructure with biomethane and bio-LNG by:

  • Connecting the first large biomethane facility to its high-pressure network.
  • Meeting the increasing demand for bio-LNG liquefaction services, especially for the German market.

Energy system integration

Fluxys Belgium has developed the North Sea Integration Model: a simulation tool that analyses interactions between electricity, hydrogen, methane, and CO₂ infrastructures, aiming to achieve net zero emissions, coordinated policy and investment decisions and an affordable energy supply.

Operational achievements

Fluxys Belgium has made significant operational achievements by building infrastructure with multi-purpose technology, strengthening interconnections and setting up cross-border partnerships, to prepare for a multi-molecule energy system.

Support and funding

For some of its projects, Fluxys Belgium has been granted support and funding from federal, European, and market funds.

ESG performance

Fluxys Belgium's commitment to sustainability is reflected in our ESG performance , with targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring safe and reliable infrastructure, and promoting employee engagement and diversity.
