Fluxys c-grid appointed as “CO₂ Network Operator” in Wallonia

Brussels - 17 July 2025 – In accordance with the decree on the transport of carbon dioxide via pipelines in the Walloon Region dated 28 March 2024, the Walloon Government today, on the proposal of Walloon Minister of Energy Cécile Neven, appointed Fluxys c-grid as the operator responsible for the development and management of a CO₂ transport network in Wallonia.

The appointment as “CNO” (CO₂ Network Operator) for the Walloon Region marks a significant step towards the decarbonisation of Walloon industry. Drawing on Fluxys’ decades of expertise in gas transport, the subsidiary Fluxys c-grid was established in 2023 together with Socofe, Pipelink, and SFPIM, with the aim of planning, developing, and managing CO₂ transport infrastructure in Belgium.

Since early 2021, in collaboration with industry, partners, authorities, and operators in neighbouring countries, we have been identifying the need for future CO₂ transport infrastructure. The phased development of this open-access pipeline network in the Walloon Region will connect industrial CO₂ emitters with CO₂ exit points towards permanent storage or reuse and will be built in line with market development.

In cooperation with the competent Walloon authorities, work is now underway on customer-oriented services and a necessary de-risking mechanism to help launch the market.

Pascal De Buck, Chairman of the Board of Fluxys c-grid: “I am delighted that the Walloon government has entrusted us with the role of CO₂ Network Operator in the Walloon Region for the next 20 years. Fluxys c-grid’s primary goal is to support society in achieving decarbonisation by providing the industry with the necessary CO₂ transport infrastructure.”

Long-term vision of the CO₂ network: Belgium as a hub for CO₂ transit and export.
